Perspectives Mixed Media painting with Acrylic, ink pen, and acrylic pen in shades of orange, purple, teal, and black on a 12 x 12 canvas

While I worked on this piece, I would flip it around to each side as I went, watching how the drips of color interacted with each other and how the whole piece would change each time I turned the canvas. As I did so, I thought about how a simple change of perspective can change the entire outlook on things and how that lesson applied to my fears about sharing my art.

I’ve never felt very qualified as an artist but I did feel driven to continue creating and expressing my feelings through my love of color and shape. Even working as a designer did not “scratch the itch” and I found myself returning to the canvas to really “listen” to my heart.

As is often the case, the artwork went from something I felt had a ton of potential and excitement, to something I didn’t care for and hardly recognized. I started imagining how the piece would be received by others and the judgemental things I could imagine people saying—which of course, are my own judgments masquerading as the thoughts of others.

Though I’m familiar with the “messy middle” it still manages to sneak up on me when I’m staring at a piece that has yet to show me her face and it was during this moment that I wrote on the canvas, turning her to the next side after each thought:

Side one: Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever have the courage to express myself in the way I imagine
Side two: Sometimes I worry that no one will care
Side three: I guess it only matters if I care
Side four: Do I care enough about myself to really listen?

This piece is currently on loan to the Chesapeake Arts Council and you can see it on display from June 13th – July 31st for the Pride Month Exhibition. I am honored to have been chosen to display my work for this show and thrilled that this piece was chosen.
